Sunday in the Park With Sondheim

Four of my favorite things....summer nights, Sondheim, my Celia and our Daniel.
Could life get any better?
I happened to hear about the free Sunday Night Concert Series sponsored by the Davis Arts Council and was thrilled they were doing a night of Sondheim hosted by Jim Christian. Ever since taking Celia to see Wizard of Oz, I've been waiting to take her to another production. I love the arts and have done my best to share that love with her. She's already familiar with several of my favorite musicals and will sing along with them in the car. I love that!
Last night a woman performed Send in the Clowns. I was thrilled! It's one of my most favorite Sondheim songs. It's very melancholy and sings of love and loss and aging. It's beautiful and tragic and always touches me. I whispered to Celia that it was one of my favorite songs and that it's also a little sad. After a few moments of intense listening she whispers back in her not so quiet voice, "Mom, is she sad because her clown died?" I couldn't stifle my giggles! The older gentleman sitting next to her couldn't either! I guess the metaphor was a little much for a four year old to grasp. But, apparently she thought about it the entire rest of the night's performance because at the end she turned to me and asked,
"Mom, can we go back stage? I think that's where the clowns are."
Maybe she was right...maybe that really is where the clowns are.

Where in the world??
